EAST ORANGE, NJ – Marsha Blount, owner of Jersey Express (New Jersey’s only professional basketball team) met with members of the city to offer youth groups from East Orange opportunities to actively participate at the team’s upcoming home games.

The Jersey Express is a member of the revamped American Basketball Association (ABA). The ABA was extremely popular many years ago. The league popularized the red, white and blue ball and showcased some of the most exciting players in the history of the game, including Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving, George ‘Ice’ Gervin, Connie Hawkins, Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore, and David Thompson.

The team’s owner, Marsha Blount, made history when in 2005 she purchased the team and became the first African American female to own a professional male sports team. An athlete herself, Blount came to East Orange to seek support for her team and to extend an opportunity for the youths of the city to engage players, perform at halftime and even assist in administration at levels unimaginable with the rival NBA league.

In a brief statement, Blount spoke of the support outgoing Mayor Robert Bowser had given her and was optimistic that Mayor-Elect Lester Taylor would be amenable to offering his support as well. “Though the games are played at Shabazz High School in Newark, The Express is Jersey’s team…New Jersey’s only professional team,” she reminded her listeners.
