Earth Week Events at New Providence Memorial Library
Thursday, March 14, 2013 • 1:49pm
This year, we are having an Earth Week event – actually 2 events – that highlight a topic of interest to NJ residents. Come out and hear Dr. Eisner speak and then follow up with the feature film “Promised Land” later in the week which explores the human and economic issues for landholders approached by drilling interests. We hope you’ll have a fuller perspective on this issue which directly affects public health here in NJ.
Hydrofracking: The Good and Bad
Monday, April 22 at 7:30PM
Come out for Earth Day and listen to Dr. Philip Eisner as he fills us in on the complex topic called Hydrolic Fracturing which is of direct relevance to us in the Garden State. The process involves tapping into reserves of natural gas by creating fractures in a rock layer. Fractures are created by injecting a proprietary blend of chemicals into the rock, creating potential threats to drinking water sources.
Here in NJ, Governor Christie vetoed a bill last September that would have banned wastewater generated by drilling from being treated or disposed of in NJ. And 2 months ago, he agreed to a 1-year moratorium on fracking, not a permanent ban, thus ensuring that the matter will continue to be debated.
Dr. Eisner has a BS in Physics from MIT and a PhD from NYU. He was a VP of Dewey Space Physics Laboratory and founder of Exxon’s Applied Physics Laboratory.
The program will take place at the New Providence Memorial Library, 377 Elkwood Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07928 and is FREE and open to all.
Feature Film showing of Promised Land
Thursday, April 25 at 2PM and 7PM
Here’s a description of the film from rottentomatoes.com
Promised Land is the new contemporary drama directed by Gus Van Sant. Matt Damon plays Steve Butler, an ace corporate salesman who is sent along with his partner to close a key rural town in his company's expansion plans. With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company's offer for drilling rights to their properties as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher with support from a grassroots campaign…. Promised Land explores America at the crossroads where big business and the strength of small-town community converge. Starring Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, John Krasinski, Hal Holbrook and Rosemarie DeWitt.
The movie will be shown at the New Providence Memorial Library, 377 Elkwood Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07928 and is FREE and open to all.
