A Newton man is facing a variety of charges after being arrested for DWI early Friday evening. At 7:04, a concerned motorist traveling on Rte 15 north called 9-1-1 and reported a possible intoxicated driver. The vehicle in question was described as a sliver Dodge Ram Pick-up Truck.
A short time later Officer Brian Hassloch located the vehicle parked in the Park & Ride at the Blue Heron Interchange. The operator of the vehicle, later identified as 35-year-old Jason Hanrahan, was found sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle drifting in and out of consciousness.
Subsequent investigation conducted by Hassloch who is a Certified Drug Recognition Expert, revealed that Hanrahan was under the influence of Heroin. Hanrahan who admitted to injecting 10-bags of heroin was found to be in possession of 46 additional wax folds stamped “TOP FLIGHT” containing heroin, along with six syringes that were found on his person.
While searching Hanrahan, the officer located a large black and orange fixed blade survival knife that was in a sheath, secured to his belt horizontally in the small of his back. Hanrahan could not provide a legitimate lawful purpose for possessing such a weapon.
Hanrahan was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for processing and additional DWI testing. Hanrahan was later charged criminally with; Possession of Heroin, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Hypodermic Syringes, Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. He was also charged with; Driving While Under the Influence of Narcotics and Possession of Narcotics in a Motor Vehicle.
Hanrahan’s vehicle was impounded. He was released several hours later to a sober family member. He has a First Appearance in Sparta Municipal Court at 6:00 pm to answer to the charges. Cpl. Robert Fraser assisted with the investigation.
