A Sparta man escaped serious injury late Friday night after the vehicle he was operating crashed and overturned in a resident’s front yard on Hickory Trail. At 11:52 pm Sparta Police received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a serious motor vehicle accident on the residential street located in the Alpine Section of Lake Mohawk.
Cpl. Louis Takacs arrived on scene a short time later. Subsequent investigation revealed the following; a black 2008 Audi A6 was being operated by 49-year-old John A. Assaro who is also a resident of Hickory Trail. He was traveling south on the road when he lost control of his vehicle. Assaro swerved to the left, leaving the traveled portion of the roadway, striking a stone wall, a fence, glancing off an evergreen tree before striking a large boulder and over-turning onto a neighbor’s yard.
Assaro was uninjured as a result of the accident. However, he was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest for DWI after he failed a series of Field Sobriety Tests. He was then transported to police headquarters for processing and breath testing.
Assaro was later charged with; DWI, Careless Driving and Failure to Maintain a Single Lane of Travel. He was released several hours later to a sober adult. Assaro has a first appearance in Sparta Municipal Court on Thursday January 31st at 9:00 a.m. to answer to the charges.
His vehicle was extensively damaged and was flat-bedded from the scene. Sgt. Neil Spidaletto, and Officers Joseph Antonello and Jeffrey McCarrick assisted at the scene.
