CHATHAM, NJ - A Chatham Township resident was charged with Driving While Intoxicated after he was reported by a school official from the Chatham Middle School.

On July 8 at approximately 1:30 p.m., patrols responded to the Chatham Middle School after the principal reported that a parent was at the school to pick up his child and appeared to be intoxicated. Patrolman Kyle Beasley observed the suspect drive out of the parking lot and turn right on Main Street.

The suspect made a left on Division Avenue and Beasley saw him fail to stop at the stop sign on Division at Kings Road. The suspect was stopped on Woodland Road and was identified as Paul Mayes, age 54 of Chatham Township.

There was no one else in the car with Mayes. Mayes exhibited signs of intoxication and performed some field sobriety tests. He was placed under arrest for DWI and transported to headquarters. He was processed and released to a friend. Mayes was charged with DWI, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Stop.

Report prepared by Kevin O'Shea of the Chatham Borough Police Department
