Driver Strikes Patrol Car While Getting Ticket for Failing to Yield

On September 12 at 8:40 AM, Patrolman Robert Sweetin stopped a car on Fairmount Avenue after the driver failed to yield to a pedestrian at the Chatham Street intersection. As Patrolman Sweetin was writing the ticket to the driver, Luba Klachko age 83 of New Providence, her car rolled backwards crashing into the patrol car. No one was injured but both cars were damaged. Klachko was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian and careless driving.
On September 12 at 10:43 AM, Patrolman Wayne Shivers investigated an accident on Main Street near Bowers Lane. A 2001 Dodge was parked on Main Street when the driver opened the driver’s door and it was struck by a passing car. The passing car was a 2011 Jeep driven by Meghan Peart age 28 of Green Lane PA. The driver of the parked car was Randolph Dembo age 53 of Lebanon NJ. No one was injured, no summonses were issued and both cars were towed from the scene.
On September 12 at 1:10 PM, Patrolman Shivers investigated a 2 car accident at the intersection of Main Street and South Passaic Avenue. A 2002 Ford van driven by Sergio Calle-Mendez age 33 of Totowa, was in the left lane of South Passaic when he tried to turn right on to Main Street. There was already a car in the right lane that he did not see. That car was a 1992 Saturn driven by Ralph Schlatter age 86 of Randolph. The impact forced the Schlatter vehicle into a utility pole. No one was injured and Calle-Mendez was issued a summons for careless driving.
On September 12 at 4:19 PM Patrolman Shivers investigated a 4 car accident on Main Street near Brooklake Road. A 2010 GMC driven by Anna Coviello age 55 of Chatham, was travelling west on Main Street when she crashed into the back of a stopped car. That car was pushed into the car in front of it and in turn that car was pushed into the first car. The drivers of the other 3 cars were Marilyn Burack age 53 of Livingston, Meredith Gondo age 35 of Madison and Kalliope DeCavalles age 77 of Madison. Gondo was transported to Morristown Medical Center on a complaint of pain. Coviello was issued a summons for careless driving.
On September 10 at 10:04 AM Sergeant Michael Mahoney investigated a truck that struck the bridge on Washington Avenue. A tractor trailer driven by Michael Vlacancich age 30 of North Brunswick was travelling south on Washington when his trailer struck the bridge. Vlacancich stated that he did not know the height of his trailer, and he was issued a summons for careless driving. His vehicle had to be towed from the scene.
