The Drive for Autism Foundation is pleased to acknowledge the support it has received during April 2012, National Autism Awareness Month.
In recognizing April as National Autism Awareness Month, the New Providence School District and Our Lady of Peace Academy participated in special events to promote Autism awareness and raise funds for the Drive for Autism Foundation. Salt Brook School, AW Roberts School and New Providence HS participated in fundraising activities in early April and raised $2227 for the Drive for Autism Foundation by selling yellow shoe laces with the theme “Stand up to Autism”. Our Lady of Peace CYO basketball participants and friends from St. Teresa’s CYO in Summit, NJ participated in the third annual Hoop Shoot in February and raised $1902 for the Drive for Autism Foundation.
Last year, Salt Brook School held its first Autism Awareness Assembly on Thursday April 7th 2011. It was initiated by 5th grade student Patrick Trezza, with the support of Jeannie Maier, principle and the School District’s Administration. The New Providence School district administration felt this program was a perfect match for the character education curriculum. Salt Brook School partnered with Children’s Specialized Hospital and Adrienne Robertiello, moderated grade appropriate presentations for each class at Salt Brook School, which provided an opportunity to learn more about autism and how it affects children.
The Program was so well received that Children’s Specialized Hospital decided use the program to make a video to distribute around the United States to schools looking to participate in Autism awareness programs. The video, titled Friends Like you Friends Like Me (http://www.childrens-specialized.org/Newsroom/videos.aspx?id=10) was unveiled to the students at Salt Brook and will be used in the future to promote Autism Awareness and inclusion.
