Downtown Summit Beefs up With the Meat House

SUMMIT, NJ - With fast food around every corner, many people wonder what happened to the good old fashioned butcher shop. The Meat House, a franchise that has 30 locations across the country is a full service butcher and grocer with the hospitality of a five star restaurant wrapped in one and it is coming to Summit in April.
Jen and David Bane of Atlantic Highlands discovered the concept about five years ago when they were at a friend’s for dinner in New Hampshire. They had some steak tips from The Meat House and said they were so good, that they began to have food from The Meat House air shipped to their home.
Recently, when they were buying meat on the company’s website, they saw there was an option for franchising and it piqued their interest.
“It’s the revival of the local butcher,” Jen said. “It’s the William Sonoma of butchers meets a gourmet specialty shop.”
The Banes met with The Meat House representatives a year ago and realized it would be a fun business to get involved in. They had to find a location with a vibrant downtown and decided Summit would be the best place to start the franchise in New Jersey. Once Summit is up and running, they plan to expand into other locations throughout the state.
“We love the town of Summit,” Dave said. “It’s the perfect fit.”
The Meat House in Summit will offer prepared meals, fresh day boat seafood, deli, a salad bar and sandwiches, beer and wine, select grocery, of which 35 percent will be from local vendors as well as fresh baked bakery items. The main focus of The Meat House is its meats. Only prime and choice meats are sold and are hand-cut to order. They also feature an array of marinated steak tips, chicken and turkey tips that are perfect to just throw on the grill. The Summit location will also have seating that will look out onto Springfield Ave, perfect for the lunch crowd.
“I think the lifestyle of New Jersey as a market caters to prepared food a lot more,” Dave said.
While the quality of food is great, the customer service is what really puts them over the top, he added. When a customer comes to the Meat House, the door is opened for them, they are greeted, given a tour if it’s their first time there and are offered samples.
“We have great products, but we back it up with our people,” he said. “It’s a business that’s focused on relationships. It’s going to be an incredible food experience.”
The Banes also plan to be involved in the community by supporting local vendors, participating in fundraisers and events and helping local organizations.
