BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Dorothy Orzech, a resident at the Berkeley Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, turned 100 years old on Monday, Oct. 14.  A celebration was planned to welcome Dorothy to the centenarian club.

The residents all gathered for the celebration with Dorothy and her two daughters, Susan Stevens and Kathleen Orzech.  Musician Robert  Marino serenaded and entertained the residents and guests.  Dorothy enjoys listening to the piano and singing along to the "old-songs."

Dorothy lived in Summit for over 30 years prior to coming to Berkeley Heights.  She was active in the Newcomers Club that led to her many years of involvement in the Town Club.  Dorothy remained active as head of the Hospitality Committee of the Town Club until she was 97 years old.  Ladies from the Town Club of Summit continue to visit Dorothy.

She volunteered into her 90s and continued to drive until she was 97.  After her husband died in 2001, she didn't want to stay home alone. She decided to volunteer one day a week answering phones for the American Red Cross in Summit.  Her timely position started one week before the 9/11 tragedy.  "What a time to start this job," said Dorothy. "A lady came in, with her two small children.  She wanted to see someone because her husband's car was still in the garage.  He never came home.  We had a fellow who was taking care of that," she sadly recalled of the tragedy.  Dorothy received recognition awards for her dedication to the American Red Cross.

Dorothy is sharp and articulate, she continues to read the daily newspaper and work on the daily crossword puzzles.  She enjoys the Wednesday Knitting Group at the home, working on her popcorn stitch afghan.  Dorothy has made over 30 afghans through the years for her nieces and nephews and family friends.

Turning 100 years old is an extraordinary milestone and the Berkeley Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was thrilled to celebrate with Dorothy and her family.
