BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – When Door Boy of Berkeley Heights was written up in a recent issue of International Door and Operator magazine, nobody who knew the company was at all surprised.

The company earned a full-color spread in the magazine, which featured an extensive interview with the McManus family, which has owned the business since its 1972 beginning as a door and trailer repair company. Bob McManus Sr. started the company and is now semi-retired. His children – Bob Jr., Mark and Cheri – now handle the day-to-day operations.

In the early days, the company focused on the trucking industry, repairing tractor trailers and container doors. According to Bob McManus, Sr., when the trucking industry hit a rough time, they added loading dock doors and equipment. In 1979, they changed their name to Door Boy and began servicing the commercial and residential overhead door industry.

Door Boy has been in its Berkeley Heights location since 1982, when it opened one of the first garage door showrooms, allowing customers to see the doors up close and in detail to help them choose the right one for their home.  

Door Boy is accredited by the IDEA (Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation), where Mark serves on the board; and a member of the North Eastern Garage Door and Operator Association. In 1999 they received the Joseph A Caputo Dealer of the Year award presented by the International Door Association in Toronto, Canada.

Bob Sr. started his career as General Motor first graduate auto technician before moving to Berkeley Heights he then worked for Hewlett Packard Company as engineer tech. In 1979 starting Door Boy, Bob Sr. became involved in making many changes in the door industry he help developing digital radio controls, for garage door and improving garage doors themselves as the technology evolved. Door Boy was one of the first to produce handmade barn door-style garage doors.

Today, Door Boy is the area’s go-to place for new garage doors or repairs on existing doors, as well as security gates, fire doors, construction gates openers, loading dock equipment, and many other types of doors.
