SUMMIT, NJ - Gymnast Emily Donohue and Varsity Football player Charlie Terry have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending October 6.
Each week throughout the school year, one girl and boy athlete will be honored for distinguishing herself / himself in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
Sophomore and co-captain Donohue, competing in the All-Around competition at both of the Hilltoppers dual meets, earned a total of 65.425 points, helping Summit to two team victories. She earned Sectional qualifying scores, making her eligible to compete in the post-season, on vault, uneven bars, and beam, scoring season-high scores in vault (8.625) and bars (7.9). Donohue placed third on vault versus Cranford, and won the All-Around competition -- while placing second on vault, bars and floor exercise -- versus Union Catholic.
Summit Gymnastics Coach, Tracy Claus, said of Donohue, "Emily has a quiet confidence about her gymnastics. She is a totally consistent and clean performer, and the team relies on her scores on all four events at each meet. Her execution is beautiful: straight knees, clean sharp body lines, and pointed toes. On every event. She gives nothing away."
Senior co-captain and quarterback Terry had another strong performance against North Plainfield, completing 6 of 9 passes for 126 yards and throwing two first-half touchdowns. For the season, Terry has completed 28 of 45 pass attempts for 569 yards and eight touchdowns, as Summit has opened their campaign with four consecutive victories.
"Charlie is not only a great quarterback, but a great teammate. You can find him helping the younger guys with plays and the younger quarterbacks with reads. He gives our team great leadership and character at the quarterback position," said Head Coach Kevin Kostibos.
