Dog Programs at Scotch Plains Public Library
Tuesday, January 15, 2013 • 10:19am
There’s a common stereotype out there that librarians are cat-lovers. Nothing against cats, but here at the Scotch Plains Public Library, we’re pretty partial to dogs. And we’ve got some great dog programs to tell you about.
Two Monday evenings every month, our Children’s Room welcomes dogs and their human volunteers from St. Hubert’s for Paws for Reading. The dogs love having stories read to them, and readers in Kindergarten and above are invited to take a turn. This is an especially great program for reluctant and beginning readers who can practice their reading skills with a willing listener. You must register in advance for your five-minute time slot. Priority is given to Scotch Plains and Fanwood cardholders. Our next January date for this ongoing program is the 28th, starting at 7:00pm. You can contact the Children’s Desk at 908-322-5007 x209 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Thursday, January 24th, at 7:00pm, we will get answers to your dog behavior and training questions. Iris Fryzel, a former canine officer with the US Department of Homeland Security/US Department of Agriculture, and her retired service dog Mindy will demonstrate some commands, and Iris will help us understand how dogs think and why they behave the way they do. Other basics of dog behavior and training will be covered. You are welcome to bring your questions, but please leave your furry friends at home.
This program is suitable for all ages, but registration is required. You can register by calling the Reference Desk at 908-322-5007 x204 or emailing us at email@example.com.
The next time you’re in the library, be sure to check out the display near the Reference Desk of just a few of our books and movies about dog behavior.
