Despite Shortage, Westfield has Road Salt for Next Storm

WESTFIELD, NJ — With yet another snow storm predicted to hit the area late Wednesday night (the ninth so far this year), Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky told The Alternative Press that the town has all hands on deck and all of its available equipment ready for what lies ahead. But one difficulty facing nearly every town in the region is a shortage of road salt.

“It’s always difficult, if not impossible, to answer questions about the salt supply as every snow/ice event is different,” said Skibitsky. “Since the region-wide shortage became known, we have been very cautious to carefully and reasonably ration the supply we have, and we do have a reserve available for Thursday’s anticipated storm.”

Weeks ago, the town placed an order with its co-op supplier, Skibitsky explained.

“It is our understanding that shipments are forthcoming. We have been on the phone every day to assure that our long-standing order receives the priority it deserves. We have also checked with other suppliers. Unfortunately, all the suppliers are in the same boat.”

The National Weather Service is predicting a mix of snow and rain over the course of the impending storm, which could make travel treacherous on Thursday.
