Sarah Ann Derstein, 32, of Clemens Court in Towamencin, is headed to state prison for 4 to 8 years for killing Dennis Kee, 15, while driving drunk—BAC twice the legal limit— and texting while driving on Route 309 on April 26, 2013, per @MontcoCourtNews.
Derstein pleaded guilty in October 2013 to homicide by vehicle while DUI in the hit-and-run death. She also pleaded guilty to DUI and accidents involving death or injury.
Derstein was high and drunk, having just left Hattrick's in Hatfield Borough, per the district attorney, and driving south on Route 309, police said. Her BAC was .167 percent.
Just three years prior, Derstein lost her license for a year. She was sentenced for a Towamencin Township DUI offense, according to court records.
Kee was on the shoulder of Route 309, walking home with friends from another friend's home, police said. It was just before 11:30 p.m.
By 11:34 p.m., emergency responders were arriving at the scene near Mill Road. Kee died from multiple blunt force injuries from being propelled by Derstein's 2007 Toyota Corolla. He was found adjacent to the southboudn shoulder of Route 309.
At the time of the accident, Kee was walking with four friends on the shoulder. Deshawn Page, 15, was also injured by Derstein in the accident.
Derstein admitted to texting at the time of the accident. After hitting Kee, police said Derstein fled south to Ogontz and Cheltenham avenues in Phialdelphia. She then returned to the scene shortly before 12:30 a.m. Phone records showed Derstein even stopped at the Walmart parking lot in Hilltown to call her mother between fleeing the scene and turning aorund in Philadelphia.
