Deputy Sheriff Shot in Paterson Sunday Morning

PATERSON, NJ - An off-duty deputy sheriff officer was in stable condition Sunday morning after being shot in the torso in front of 247 Straight St.
According to Detective Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez, the officer was standing in front of that address at 1:30 a.m. when he was shot. Although the officer was armed, his injuries rendered him unable to return gunfire. The officer's name is Oneil Peart, an Essex County Deputy Sheriff Officer who lives in Paterson.
"It should be noted that (the officer) is a victim of a horrific crime and he is not under investigation in this matter," Rodriguez said in a statement.
A second victim, a 22-year-old man from Paterson, was shot in the neck area in the same incident. This victim was also in stable condition Sunday morning.
