Temple Emanu-El of Westfield will be holding a special event during its annual Selichot program this year on Saturday, September 20 – Defending the Jewish State, Preserving Jewish Values: Israeli Emissaries in Conversation with Rabbi Douglas Sagal.

According to Rabbi Sagal, Senior Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El, the High Holyday period, which begins this year on September 20, is a time when Jews traditionally look inward and examine themselves as Jews and as human beings in a spirit of repentance. They prepare for Rosh Hashanah (a day of judgment) and Yom Kippur (a day of atonement). During the High Holydays this year, at a time of war and conflict in Israel, many Jews might ask, how do we support and defend the State of Israel while maintaining our values as Jews?

This issue will be the topic at hand when Rabbi Sagal is joined by four Israeli emissaries – Amir Schacham, Associate Executive Vice President, Israel and Overseas, Jewish Federation of MetroWest NJ; Moshe Levi, Community Shaliach (emissary), JFED MetroWest NJ; and Yuval Dafadi and Ido Sarig, two 18-year-old Israeli students who are participating in a year-long emissary program in the U.S. prior to joining the Israeli Defense Force in Israel.

The event will be held at Temple Emanu-El (756 East Broad Street, Westfield) at 7:45 p.m., following a Havdalah service at 7:30. Attendees are invited to stay for dessert, coffee, and Selichot services following the program.

Defending the Jewish State, Preserving Jewish Values is co-sponsored by the Israel Program Center of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ.
