DeCorso Community Center Should Serve the Entire New Providence Community

I have been following the conversation regarding the DeCorso Community Center in New Providence. It is my understanding that a group of individuals is challenging the Community’s use of the facility, and attempting to limit it to Senior Activities during daytime hours only. Since this is the only usable indoor community space owned by the borough, it is extremely short-sighted to put such limitations on the venue. As a volunteer for several New Providence non-profit groups, I have worked on many fundraisers at the DeCorso Community Center, including the New Providence Education Foundation’s Casino Royale, Salt Brook School’s Spring Fling, and AWR’s Holiday Fair. Each event was well-attended by members of the NP community, and raised thousands of dollars for our schools. None of the events was rowdy, or damaged the Center or its surroundings. In my opinion, all were perfect examples of the way a Community Center should be used.
Current usage policies allow for non-profit groups based in New Providence to utilize the Borough’s facilities when available. The DeCorso Community Center is currently the only indoor venue where alcohol is permitted, and therefore the only place that a fundraising social can be held. It will create a hardship on all New Providence non-profit groups who are trying to raise money for programs in our town if we were no longer allowed to use the DeCorso Community Center for nighttime fundraisers where alcohol is served. There is no basis for the change and I urge all residents to stand up for the existing policies.
