SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD, NJ – In the race for three open seats on the Board of Education, unofficial tallies indicate that incumbent Elizabeth Daugherty and challenger Johanna Wright have both won, while the third spot is too close to call as of this writing.

"The voters of South Orange and Maplewood spoke and elected me to the Board of Education. Thank you for your support," Wright said. "I can't wait to sit in the 'horse shoe' and serve students with the same passion, energy and authenticity I have demonstrated during my 30 plus years teaching in the district.  But most of all, I want to thank you all for helping me reach this incredible milestone. Now, it's time to get to work."

With 93.94 percent of votes recorded, Daugherty has received 5,187 votes and Wright has 4,485, followed by David Giles with 3,829, Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad with 3,818 and Marian Cutler with 3,067.

The winners will serve three-year terms on the Board of Education. These numbers were posted by the Essex County Clerk's Office and do not include any absentee ballots or provisional ballots.

This is the first BOE election in this district to take place in November to coincide with the general election, a change made to capture higher voter turnout.
