A resident of Spruce Street in Lansdale was appointed to a vacancy on the borough Planning Commission Wednesday night in a 6-3 vote.

John Darab will take over the seat vacated by Sean Greene. Darab will serve a four-year term, expiring in December 2017.

Councilmen Jack Hansen, Rich DiGregorio and Leon Angelichio voted against Darab's appointment.

Council President Jason Van Dame said Darab was recommended for the seat by the Appointments Committee.

Another candidate for the seat was licensed electrician Vincent Coleman, of IBEW Local 380. He is a contractor working on projects, at present, at Merck.

Darab was absent from Wednesday's meeting. Coleman, of Elm Drive, made a statement prior to the vote. He said he moved to Lansdale three years ago and fell in love with the town.

"The first time my family was in Lansdale, we looked at the house that we bought. We drove around, and we loved it. We saw how much potential it had," Coleman said. "I wanted to be a part of it."

Coleman said he is involved in local community service, serving as a delegate for the AFL-CIO in Montgomery County. His IBEW is even doing the electrical work at the new borough municipal complex.

"I just wanted a chance, that's all," he said.

Van Dame thanked Coleman for his application. He encouraged anyone to get involved with the community. Van Dame said the recommendation of Darab was "no slight to" Coleman, and Coleman took no offense.

Hansen said both Darab and Coleman were very high qualified.

"Mr. Darab has been here many times. I spoke with him, and he'd be an asset to the planning commission," he said. "Mr. Coleman is a young man who chose to raise his family here. I believe his credentials through on-the-job training and apprenticeship programs would also be an asset to the planning commission."
