WEST ESSEX, NJ - According to predictions from the Essex County Airport located in Fairfield, the National Weather Service has placed this area under two Hazardous Weather Advisories. Winter Storm Magnus is approaching the Tri-State area after the severe thunderstorms and tornadoes it’s left in its wake in the South and Mid Atlantic.
The Flash Flood Watch is forecasting heavy rains today, especially from 6pm until midnight. Accumulations of 1.5" are expected to cause local flooding especially around small streams and poor drainage areas.
A High Wind Warning is in effect from 6pm this evening until 6am tomorrow morning. Strong winds along with the heavy rains are expected to gust into gale force levels which are powerful enough to bring down whole trees, large tree limbs, power lines, and any unsecured objects. Houses and any structures near large trees are susceptible to damage along with power outages. Driving will be especially difficult.
Between 1pm to 7pm, gusting Near Gale Winds of 38 mph should make it difficult to walk.
7pm to 10pm will bring increasingly stronger winds, gusting at Fresh Gale rates of 44 mph, making it difficult to drive.
The wind is expected to pick up in strength by 10pm, gusting at 47 mph, Strong Gale; enough for small trees to blow over.
The worst of the evening winds will occur by 11pm when Whole Gale winds between 55 to 57 mph should be gusting at rates strong enough to uproot trees completely. These intense winds should continue until 2am.
Going into Thursday, winds are expected to be gusting at Strong Gale and Near Gale speeds between 38 mph and 45 mph up until 5pm tomorrow afternoon.
