SUMMIT, NJ - The City of Summit offers curbside leaf collection twice a year, during the Spring and Fall, from residential properties. In addition to the bagged leaf collection, the Roads Unit will vacuum leaves from the gutters during the Fall season for leaves that fall into the roadway only. The collection program will run Monday, October 7 - Friday, December 6, 2013 or until the first major snow storm. Here are the essential details:
- Leaves are collected on residents' regularly scheduled trash day.
- Leaves are collected curbside.
- Leaves must be in paper, biodegradable bags curbside.
- Leaves left at the curb after the last regularly-scheduled collection day will not be picked up and must be removed by the resident.
In addition to these "do's" there are a few "don'ts", including:
- Burning of leaves is prohibited by law (Chapter 151 of the New Jersey Laws of 1989)
- Raking or Blowing leaves into the street is prohibited (Revised General Ordinances 3-12.2)
The City encourages residents to create a compost pile in their backyard. Backyard Leaf Composting, a pamphlet prepared by the Cooperative Extension Service of Rutgers University’s Cook College, is available from the Department of Community Services. There are specific rules for use of the City Compost Area, for both residents and commercial landscapers.
