Criminal Mischief

Newton Police are investigating an incident of criminal mischief that occurred within the Newton Cemetery along Woodside and Lawnwood Avenues between 9/7/12 and 9/10/12 that resulted in significant damage to a number of gravestones.
On 9/11/12 at 9:55a.m., the Newton Police received a report of criminal mischief within the Newton Cemetery. Upon arrival, patrols found that a large decorative granite planter in close proximity to a Mausoleum had been knocked over. The planter was broken and thrown about causing damage to other nearby tombstones as a result of the unknown actor(s) hurling the broken pieces of the planter against them. Additionally, the top of a large marble monument was dislodged from its base. Damage was estimated to be approximately $20,000.
Actors are suspected of consuming alcohol that night as evidenced by several bottles of liquor and beer cans being strewn about.
The incident is being actively investigated by the Newton Police Department and anyone with information relating to these acts of criminal mischief are asked to contact the Newton Police at 973-383-2525. All information will be kept confidential.
