Corey 'Pick 6,' Chatham Defense Lead 7th Graders

Sunday, October 6, 2013 • 7:25pm

CRANFORD, NJ - It was one of those games where defense ruled the roost. In fact the only scoring play was a Jack Corey “Pick-6” midway through the first quarter.

Zach Hoban followed Corey's interception return with a two-point conversion kick and the Cougar defense did the rest in the 8-0 victory, the third in a row for the seventh-graders.

With Cranford deep in their own end in the first quarter, Corey stepped in front of a short pass at Cranford’s 34-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown. Hoban's kick made it 8-0. After a Cranford drive again stalled after four downs, a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave them back the ball and moved Cranford into Chatham territory. But once again the Chatham defense stymied the drive and Cranford was forced to give up the ball on downs.

While there were a number of long drives throughout the game by both Cranford and Chatham, including a 50-yard run by Colin Hart, it was strong defense, and some crucial penalties against Chatham that held both teams back from scoring any further points.

“I thought our defense played outstanding today," Chatham coach Chris Agnew said. "They did the job they needed to get us the win."

Chatham 7th (3-1) takes its three-game winning streak to Sayreville South for a 12 p.m. start next week.
