Congregation Beth Israel to Host A Capella Concert

Friday, March 8, 2013 • 7:18pm

The Shabbatones, a nationally recognized a cappella ensemble from the University of Pennsylvania, will perform at Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains on Saturday, March 16, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.   The concert is free and open to the community.  Refreshments will be served.

During the first hour of the event, the Shabbatones will conduct a musical workshop geared especially for children and teenagers who enjoy singing and want to learn basic a cappella techniques. Simultaneously, Matt Axelrod, Cantor of Congregation Beth Israel, will review Passover melodies with the adults in attendance.  These workshops will be followed by a Shabbatones concert for all ages.  The Shabbatones sing popular Israeli, Jewish and American songs that appeal to a diverse audience.

The Shabbatones hail from Philadelphia and recently toured San Francisco, Houston, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami.  They have a special connection to Congregation Beth Israel, however.  Ezra Margolin, 21, the Shabbatones’ Tour Manager and Past-President, is a member of Congregation Beth Israel.  Ezra, who resides in Westfield, had been President of Congregation Beth Israel’s youth group, United Synagogue Youth, 2007-2008.

“This will be a wonderful way to spend a Shabbat afternoon, filled with Jewish music and learning,” said Cantor Matt Axelrod.  “We’re thrilled to welcome Ezra back so he and his fellow performers can inspire a new generation of children,” Axelrod said.

For additional information, call the synagogue office at (908) 889-1830.  Congregation Beth Israel is located at 18 Shalom Way, Scotch Plains (at the corner of Martine Avenue).
