Community Garden Announced at Edison Middle School in West Orange

WEST ORANGE, NJ - After several years of discussion with the West Orange school district, community leaders and environmental advocates, Edison Green Gardens, a raised-bed community garden, will be open to the West Orange community this spring. A meeting will be held in the community garden area with interested residents, community leaders, and organizations on Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m.
The raised-bed garden was the brainchild of Edison Middle School Science teachers Martha Van Loon and Joan Kornoelje, who wanted to do something environmentally-friendly and community-based at EMS on the site where trailers once stood. A few years ago, the students at Edison Middle School, along with teachers and the PTA, created a flower garden incorporating elements like wood, recycled tires, and rocks.
The target group for the general interest meeting includes, but is not limited to: West Orange elementary schools, local food pantries, girl and boy scout troops, church groups and youth groups, and gardening enthusiasts. Everyone is encouraged to attend the meeting. Community garden rules will be established and there will be a nominal membership fee, with a refundable key deposit fee. The garden will need volunteers to help maintain it, and it is hoped that a portion of each garden will be "tithed" to local food pantries and food banks.
