SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – There will be a Columbus Day ceremony at the Columbus Monument in front of Scotch Plains Town Hall on Saturday at 11 a.m. The event is hosted by the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Chapter of UNICO National, the Italian-American Club of Scotch Plains and the Knights of Columbus #5730 Council.

UNICO is the largest Italian American service organization in the US. It is a non-profit, chartered in 1974 and their mission is to support scholarship programs, charitable organizations and local families in need.

The Scotch Plains Italian-American Club was founded in 1906 and is a private non-profit organization that supports various charities through financial contributions, and the member volunteer their time and talents to the community.

The Knights of Columbus was formed to offer financial aid and assistance to sick, disabled, and needy members and their families. Fellowship is promoted through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

Scotch Plains recently celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the installation of the Columbus Day sculpture. The artist and sculptor of the marble piece, Gheorghi Filin, was on hand that day, visiting the US from Italy.

Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover told The Alternative Press that “we are celebrating the spirit of exploration, the 15th anniversary of our very own Christopher Columbus Monument, and the 521st anniversary of his crossing. I really think we are going to have a wonderful day. I hope to see everyone there.”

There will be musical performances by Marianna Biribin and The Westfield Community Band Brass Quintet Ensemble and light refreshments will follow the ceremony.
