SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- Sophomore Jordan Fields' 14-point game led the attack as Columbia High School defeated Irvington, 44-14, in a dominant performance at South Orange Middle School on Thursday night.

"This year I've tried to step it up a bit," Fields said. "There's always a lot more that I can do, but I just want to make sure our team wins, so I try to help in as many ways as possible."

The Blue Knights were unable to reach double digits until 6:45 left in regulation when Genea Coleman hit a 3-pointer. The Cougars played tough, physical defense to keep the Irvington offense in check for all four quarters.

"We've been emphasizing our defensive efforts in the past few weeks," Cougars' head coach Johanna Wright said. "We've been focusing on different types of defense and executing them during the game."

Columbia executed on both sides of the ball as the Cougars' offense dominated possession due to the aggressive defensive efforts by the girls. With that, they controlled the tempo of the game and played well together.

"We've gotten a lot better at communicating," Fields said. "When we start to play better defense, we automatically get better on offense and we start generating more points."

Fields was the high scorer for the Cougars, but Dominique Rayam (9 points) and Courtney Miller (8 points) also contributed to the win.

"Jordan is extremely poised for a sophomore," Wright said. "She's got a lot of confidence that she’s been able to build after her first year on the varsity level."

The Cougars increased their winning streak to five with the victory over Irvington and improved their overall record to 10-6 for the season.
