MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Columbia High School, which serves Maplewood and South Orange, has earned the grade of “B” in a recent survey of New Jersey high schools by Inside Jersey magazine.

The ratings were compiled by Inside Jersey for the report using a proprietary formula that “compared results during a four-year period, looking for trends in student achievement.”

Data came from the New Jersey Department of Education, which provided the High School Proficiency Assessment results for language arts and math tests for the general student population. Then they added SAT scores for each school and weighted them over the four-year period.

Schools that had higher than average test scores were given As and Bs, while schools with below-average scores earned Cs and Ds.  According to the report, schools with Bs, “were the ones that showed the most improvement in the last four years.”

Median Score (all schools): 317 with 4.8 percent median growth.

Columbia HS (“B” grade):  333.1 with 6.7 percent growth.

The four-year improvement exhibited by CHS is significant, and with above-average scores, should have the school moving up next year.
