ROSELAND, NJ – On Tuesday, June 17, the College Benefits Research Group (CBRG) hosted a “College Planning Workshop” for families. During this information session, parents and teens gained information for success in planning for college.

Co-founder of CBRG Steven Sirot, who conducted the workshop, began by explaining the importance of knowing the term “Estimated Family Contribution” (EFC), which is the amount a family is judged capable of paying. Sirot said that CBRG can assist with finding various ways to decrease this number.

Throughout the workshop, Sirot discussed college costs, standardized tests, how colleges select students, how to select a college and how to pay for education. He also gave a timeline for success and provided case studies.

“We call it a foundations course—these are all the principles that all the families should be looking at in this process,” said Sirot. “Since 1985, there has been a 500 percent increase in the cost of college including tuition and fees.”

In addition to the financial information given to families, the workshop also provided information for helping students become ideal candidates for colleges. Participants received a “Top Ten List” that included tips like having a rigorous high school curriculum that challenges the student.

“If the student feels like they could do the work in that AP class, that’s probably what they should do, but if they have to kill themselves to get that B-, then it’s probably not a good idea,” Sirot told the audience. “You want to focus on effort—the results will be a product of the effort. Colleges do look at consistency.”

“The student should also have passionate involvement in a few activities that demonstrate leadership and initiative,” he added. “It is more important that they follow their passions, and make sure that comes across in the process of applying to schools.”

CBRG is offering “College Planning Workshops” throughout the summer, at the Roseland location, on: June 17, July 22 and August 19, at 6:45 p.m. After attending a workshop, each family is entitled to a free consultation. To reserve a seat for one of the workshops, click HERE or call 888-802-2740.
