LIVINGSTON NJ: The Livingston Ice Hockey team is in the midst of a successful season—of which few could have predicted. Losing the bulk of last year’s phenomenal team, few outside the team thought this year’s squad would have a chance to emulate last year’s success. However, the team has compiled a 14-6-4 record and is in the second round of the state tournament. Senior Captain Cole Friedfertig has been a very big reason why they have been so successful..

For his efforts in leading this year’s team, The Alternative Press has named Cole Friedfertig its 'Athlete of the Week.'

"Cole is a great team player," said Coach David Conklin. "He is our number one defenseman. A great shut down D [defense] that is an offensive threat as well."

“I really appreciated being picked captain by my teammates, it was a huge honor,” said Friedfertig. “I’ve had some great captains over my past few years and wanted to make sure I gave our new and returning players a role model like I had the past few years. The past captains brought so much intensity to every game, which really pumped me up. I just try and push all of the players on the team to work harder.”

Assistant Captain David Reiter thinks highly of his teammate and said, “He is a great captain and he puts everything out on the ice. He is a major part of our success for his play on the ice and his leadership off the ice.”

In addition to being the undisputed leader in the locker room, Friedfertig is a talented player. He consistently logs the most time on ice every game and is the anchor of a blueline that consists of him and three underclassmen. He also has nine goals and 20 assists for the season.

Teammate Jared Appelbaum calls Friedfertig’s skills “second to none,” and his instincts “innate.”

If Livingston is going to make noise in the state tournament, don’t be surprised if Friedfertig is right in the thick of things.

Unfortunately, Friedfertig’s hockey career will end as soon as soon as the Lancers season ends. He does not know where he will be attending college, but he will be majoring in political science.

Like most of The Alternative Press (TAP) sites, Livingston TAP has a team of student interns who help us report on sports and other school-related activites. As part of the intern program, each week, the student interns choose an "Althlete of the Week" to write on for http://www.thealternativepress.com/towns/livingston. This column celebrates outstanding LHS student athletes and showcases our student interns' writing skills.
