FANWOOD, NJ – At Tuesday’s Fanwood agenda meeting, Mayor Colleen Mahr addressed the parking at Fanwood Crossing II and III. The environmental cleanup is under way at the municipal parking lot behind the stores on Martine Avenue.
After equipment was brought to the site, there was a conference call from the contractor to the fire department, police department and the Board of Health last Friday, “so that everyone understood what is being housed there on the site” said Mahr.
Material will be injected, over the next two weeks, which encapsulates the tar and turns it into a brick. Mahr said, “This technology is very innovative.” The process is called In-Situ Geochemical Stabilization. The mayor suggested that the borough apply for the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection supports the application.
During the agenda meeting, Borough Engineer Dominic Carrino reported on the caboose project. In 2007, Fanwood acquired a 1940s train caboose. It currently resides in the recycling center. Carrino mentioned that he had heard from Eileen Shack at the Department of Transportation regarding the acquisition of additional funding. The DOT is requesting that the borough fill out a Federal Aid Highway Program questionnaire.
“It’s a positive sign that they are considering funding this," Carrino said.
