PATERSON, NJ - Paterson police have arrested 24-year-old city resident Jerel Wilkins on firearms charges after assigning a Crime Suppression Detail to a Northside crime "hot spot."
According to Lt. Patrick Murray of the Ceasefire Unit, detectives received information that a male in the area of Temple and North 7th streets was brandishing a handgun on Friday night. When they got there, detectives encountered a male matching the physical description, and that individual ran away and into a liquor store.
"The male was located inside the liquor store, at which time he attempted to remove a firearm from a holster he had secured to his upper body" Murray said. "The suspect was disarmed by detectives and taken into custody, and the firearm was recovered during his arrest."
Police recovered a loaded .38 caliber handgun from Wilkins, who is in Paterson police custody awaiting an initial court appearance. Bail has not been set yet.
