PATERSON, NJ – There’s one thing worse than having to wake up early in the morning to move the car for street cleaners. That’s oversleeping and getting a ticket, or getting towed.

In a city like Paterson, adjusting to the street cleaning schedule is part of many people’s day-to-day lives.

So, City Council members were tinkering with something important to the quality of life when they considered changing street-cleaning times on five Paterson streets.  In recognition of that, the council has delayed action on an ordinance that it had been scheduled to vote upon on Tuesday.

Instead, the proposal will be discussed at the council’s April 3 agenda session and may come up for a vote on April 12.

Under the proposal, street cleaning times would change from 1-3 pm to am-noon on sections of Matlock Street and Crosby, Union, Totowa, Ryle avenues.

Among the issues that council members said needed further discussion were the city’s courtesy policy allowing vehicles with handicapped tags to remain park during cleaning times without getting tickets, the question of when vehicles would be towed if parked in violation of cleaning regulations and what changes need to made to ensure that street cleaners can get to all Paterson streets.
