CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham High basketball teams have the "Sixth Man" section in the gym to cheer them on to victory. More help could be on the way with the revival of winter cheerleaders for the upcoming season.

If the Chatham Board of Education votes to approve the winter cheerleading program, then the pom-poms will be out this season during Chatham basketball games after an eight-year hiatus.

"The template for these kind of programs is two or three years before they can become permanent," said Celeste Stinson, who has petitioned the Board of Education for approval.

According to Stinson, if the board gives its approval on Wednesday, the first practice for the cheerleaders will be Thursday under the direction of coach Kristiann Puorro, who guided the outdoor cheerleaders this fall. Two of Stinson's daughters, junior Shelby and freshman Lindsey, are members of the potential winter squad.

"We haven't had winter cheerleaders at Chatham for eight years," Stinson said.

The funding for the program is being provided by the Chatham High School Athletic Booster Club, which has pre-approved funding of $5,000.
