CHATHAM, NJ - The Chatham Baseball team pulled out their first win of the season Tuesday afternoon in dramatic fashion. The Cougars took on the Madison Dodgers in a home game and came out victorious with a one-run win. The final score was 8-7 and put the cougars back on the right track.

After a rocky, 0-11 start to their 2014 campaign, Chatham felt the pressure to get that first win. To start the season, the Cougars struggled from the batter’s box and fought to put runs on the board. That along with solid competition and pitching made for a difficult start to the season.

“It was great to finally get that first win out of the way" Chatham sophomore third baseman Jake Bevich said. "Today our bats finally came alive. It was a great team effort at the plate.”

Fellow sophomore infielder Chris Bredahl collected three hits and scored a run. Another player to step up at the plate was catcher Merrick Seltz. Seltz went 4 for 4 with an RBI, which proved crucial in the tight match-up.

However, no player was more vital to the team’s breakout win than senior Michael Bazzani. Bazzani came out of the game as the winning pitcher as the team clinched the lead under his 3 and 2/3 innings of relief. Despite his prowess on the mound, the senior’s biggest contribution came in the bottom of the sixth when he launched a 2 run blast over the wall, giving Chatham a one run lead and. It was his first home run of the season.

“Bazzani’s home run gave us all the momentum we needed and pulled out the W,” Bevich said.
