Chatham Voters Say "Yes" to School Budget and Enhanced Technology

CHATHAM, NJ - Voters in both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township voted "Yes" by a comfortable margin on Wednesday, April 23, in approving the 2014/2015 school budget and for the addition of $460,000 to enhance the technology program.

In the borough, 70.69 percent voted in the affirmative for the $65.6 million budget and 65.92 percent cast their ballots in favor of Question 2 - to spend $460,000 to enhance the technology program. In the township, 71.72 percent voted for the budget and 66.80 percent voted for question No. 2.

The vote in the borough was 762 to 316 for the budget and 708 to 366 for the enhanced technology. A total of 1,100 people out of a possible 6,089 cast votes, representing 18.07 percent of the electorate.

In the township, the vote was 1504 to 609 in favor of the school budget and 1393 to 713 for  the enhanced technology. A total of 2,142 out of a possible 13,871 votes were cast, representing 15.44 percent of the electorate.

Board of Education members Richard Connors, Jill Critchley Weber, Michelle Clark and Kim Cronin were all voted to new terms without opposition. Connors and Weber, representing the borough, received 687 and 716 votes, respectively.

In the township, Clark, recently named to fill a vacancy on the board, and Cronin received 828 and 829 votes, respectively.

The school budget for the District of the Chathams will go up 3.34 percent.its $65,637,886 budget for the 2014/2015 school year.

The district tax levy increases by $1,408,373, a rise of 2.52 percent over last year. The amount to be raised by taxes is $57,282, 607.

The board's permanent increase per year of $460,000 to "Enhance and Augment the District Technology Education Program." raises the tax levy by .82 percent.

Chatham will receive an increase in state aid of $81,200.

The budget includes school improvements from the capital reserve fund, which will include: Tile replacement at Chatham Middle School, auditorium window upgrade at CMS, toilet room upgrade at CMS, toilet room upgrade at Washington Avenue School, and Turf replacement at Cougar and Haas fields.
