Chatham Taking Steps in the Right Direction for STEM
Friday, April 25, 2014 • 4:20pm
Chatham voters approved the school budget this week and also the crucial second question, to provide additional funding for technology enhancements throughout our school system. This result will put us on the path to acceptable norms of STEM staffing and support for our children in an area that will be critical to our children's futures.
It is however, not typical that we as a community settle for 'normal' when it comes to the facilities and support that we provide to our children. Whether in areas of sport, arts or culture this is a community that promotes robust programs for its younger members born of a healthy collaboration between the educational system, private enterprise and the contributions (time, money and resources) of dedicated parents. There is no reason that such support should not continue to extend to support our children who seek to broaden their skills in science, technology, engineering and math.
While there are opportunities for the school board to integrate technology further (a science research program for high school students, expanded Summer internship programs for Junior students and stipends for extracurricular STEM coaching), the community is actively engaged in many other programs (after school enrichment, summer technology programs, mentoring programs and tech company visits and talks). Much more information on available programs for our students (and ways in which parents can get involved) can be viewed at www.ChathamSTEM.org
We are moving in the right direction, it's up to all of us to keep the momentum going.
