Chatham Superintendent LaSusa Expresses 'Subdued Enthusiasm' over No. 1 Ranking

CHATHAM, NJ - Dr. Michael LaSusa presented a somewhat surprising reaction to the Board of Education on Monday night when he addressed the No. 1 public school ranking that Chatham High recently received from New Jersey Monthly magazine.

"As all of you are aware, we received some positive publicity in the past week or so with New Jersey Monthly ranking Chatham High School as the No. 1 high school in the state in its semi-annual ranking of the state's public high schools," LaSusa said. "And that's cause for good feeling I suppose, but at the same time I still continue to think that rankings are dubious and don't tell us that much about schools.

"I'll mention to you that the bulk of the data used in this year's rankings came from the 2012-2013 school year, which, ironically, was the year in which Chatham was ranked No. 20 and quite a few people were concerned. These data points can fluctuate ever so slightly and cause some districts to be on the winning side of the situation and some to be on the losing side. I just think the data points don't really paint the picture of what goes on in a school and the complexity of what education is about. My enthusiasm is subdued."

There will be 30 new staff members in Chatham when school opens on Sept. 4. LaSusa reported that practically all school construction and improvements are completed or on schedule to be finished by the first day of school. There will be 4,120 students enrolled in the district this year, compared to the 4,133 figure at the end of school in June.
