NEW YOK - A group of 24 Chatham students, parents and members of school district toured Google, Inc., in New York City on Nov. 22.

Chatham STEM organized the tour and the hosts were Shubin Zhao and Yong Li, two Chatham residents and Google employees, who each have Ph.ds in Computer Science.

The students toured the innovative and inspiring Google office, which was recently ranked by CNN Money Magazine as the number one best company to work for.  Shubin Zhao presented an overview of Google, its community education outreach and the basics of search engine functionality. The tour concluded with a hands-on look at Google’s 3D Map by Yong Li, who works on Google Maps.  The students loved zooming in on Mars and more locally, our Chatham schools and recreation facilities.

In addition to Google, Chatham STEM has hosted student tours of the Princeton Physics Lab, the University of Pennsylvania Robotics Department, the Biomedical Research Lab of New Jersey and a meeting with Sue Williams of Maker's Toolox, which creates inspiring and innovative robotic toys for children.

Furthermore, over 80 Chatham students have been involved with Lego Robotics, including 12 students who participated in the First Lego League competition and won for Robot Design in the regional qualifiers.

Chatham STEM is a network of parents, students and educators who are promoting excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for our Chatham students (K-12) and is currently seeking 501(c)(3) status.

Chatham STEM is dedicated to researching best practices; informing the students and parents of this research; and engaging the students and educators in exciting, stimulating and challenging programs. In doing so, Chatham STEM is also committed to bridging the gender gap and sharing the opportunities with lower income communities.
