Chatham Resident Charged After Two Separate Accidents

January 26, 2013 5:01 p.m. - Antonio Caponigro, 31, of Florham Park was stopped for a motor vehicle violation on Shunpike Road by Sergeant Thomas Miller. A subsequent check determined that Caponigro’s driver’s license was suspended and he had outstanding traffic warrants totaling $3,700 from several other jurisdictions. Caponigro was charged with speeding, driving with a suspended license and later released after posting bail. He is scheduled to appear in municipal court in February.

January 26, 2013 5:40 a.m. - Officer Keith Johnson investigated an accident at 25 Hickory Place after it was reported that a vehicle had struck one of the buildings and left the scene. During the officer’s investigation, a vehicle connected to the accident was found parked in the lot near the building. As a result, Owen Weed, 31, of Chatham was charged with leaving the scene and failure to report an accident, failure to exhibit documents, careless driving and driving with no liability insurance.

While responding to this accident, Sergeant Thomas Miller identified the scene of another accident on Shunpike Road in front of Shunpike Field. At this location, Miller determined that a vehicle had left the roadway and struck both an electrical box and a telephone pole. The driver left the scene, and in doing so also left behind his front license plate. The registered owner for the license plate was Owen Weed, and belonged to the same vehicle he had struck the building with on Hickory Place. As a result of this accident, Weed was charged with leaving the scene and failure to report an accident, careless driving and driving with no liability insurance. He is scheduled to appear in municipal court in February.

January 18, 2013 - A River Edge Drive resident reported the theft of two laptop computers from her residence. Sometime during the day unforced entry was gained to the residence at which time the laptops, valued at $1,200 were taken. The case has been turned over to the detective bureau for investigation.

January 27, 2013 5:22 a.m. - The Chatham Township Police, Chatham Township Fire Department and the Chatham Emergency Squad responded to a single vehicle accident on Fairmount Avenue. The vehicle, a 2007 Nissan Murano being operated by Richard Raymond, 36, of Stirling, left the roadway, rolled over and struck a tree on the front lawn of a residence. Raymond, who was out of the vehicle when officers arrived, informed Officer Anthony Loporto that he swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway which ultimately caused the accident. Raymond was transported to Overlook Hospital by the emergency squad with non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
