MORRISTOWN, NJ - It was an intense, physical ice hockey showdown at Mennen Arena on Friday night, as Morris Knolls shutout Chatham 3-0.
Chatham had the early advantage when Morris Knolls’ Zach Simmons committed an early interference penalty less than one minute into the game. Despite putting three shots on net, the Cougars failed to score.
The rest of the period was played back-and-forth until the Golden Eagles broke through Chatham’s goalie with 57 seconds left in the first period. Morris Knolls’ Ryan Deemer scored the game’s first goal, giving his team the 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Chatham started the second period off physically with a few hard hits onto the glass. Offensively, the Cougars put up three shots in the first five minutes wihthout scoring a goal. However, Morris Knolls ended the second period with their second goal, this time from Ben Schaeffer, with just 1:21 remaining in the second period.
The Golden Eagle’s Jack Monahan started off the third period with a goal off a rink-wide pass to put Morris Knolls up 3-0.
Chatham Head Coach Frank Gilberti stressed the need to play hard in front of the goalie.
He said one thing his team needs to do is execute the plays in front of them at all zones.
Cougar goalie Jordan Boles echoed Gilberti’s thoughts on Chatham’s execution.
“We played hard, we were the better team, we just did not execute,” Boles said. “We need to execute.”
Chatham returns to the ice on Monday, when the Cougars face Morristown at Mennen Arena.
