CHATHAM, NJ - While there have plenty of games this season, Chatham's boys' lacrosse game has been inflamed by one game and that came last season.

It was the last game of the year as the Cougars fell 7-6 to Summit in the Group 2 state title game.

While the graduated seniors did not have a shot at a Group title this year, the rest of the Chatham players have been thinking about that game all season.

"It feels like yesterday," said Chatham senior goalie Corey Fritts. "That game has pushed us and motivated us."

And now the talk will turn into action on Wednesday as the second-seeded Cougars took care of the preliminaries with a 7-2 victory over third-seeded Hopewell Valley Central on Saturday at Cougars Field.

"It's bittersweet ending for the most part I have played three years on this field," said Fritts, one of the 13 seniors on the squad, who had six saves in the contest. "To have it end up as a win makes it feel great."

The victory raised the Cougars record to 15-7 behind three goals from sophomore David Gill and pair of goals each from Sam Carson and Cory Heidaran.

Fritts felt that he needs to play better and that he allowed the two goals.

"The defense played great," said Fritts about the likes of Owen Hewes, Will Weichert and Thomas Stephen. "The two goals were my fault."

But Fritts was one of the keys in the victory on Saturday and during the season.

Now, Chatham will have a shot at the Group 2 title, but it will be a different opponent. Since Summit moved down to Group 1, the opponent will be top-seeded Somerville, a 11-4 victor over fourth-seeded Seneca on Wednesday. It was Somerville that lost to Summit in last year's Group 2 semi-finals.

The Cougars showed that they are very deep when it comes to the offensive categories especially since one of their top scorers, Kyle Howard-Johnson.

Gill would score the first two goals and take a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes. "After the first one went in, I just fed off of it," said Gill. "Whenever we get off to a good start, it gets everybody going."

By the end of the first 24 minutes Chatham would hold a 5-1 lead and would control the second half.

Every time that Hopewell Valley would make a push, Sam Carson and the Cougars would respond and put Hopewell Valley in its place.

After Hopewell Valley cut the Cougars lead to four, 6-2, with nine minutes off the second half clock, Carson scored his second goal of the game to make it 7-2.

For Chatham, heading into the Group 2 finals is a far cry from when they had a stretch of losses to the likes of Glen Ridge, Summit, Hunterdon Central and Kinnelon.
