Chatham Borough Police Investigate iPhone Theft, Two-Car Crash

On February 18, Patrolman Andrew Pereira investigated the theft of a phone from a customer at the CVS. A resident of Lafayette Avenue reported that she was at the photo counter at the CVS when she accidentally left her iPhone 5 on the counter when she was paying the cashier. When she discovered it was missing, she went back to the CVS but the phone had not been turned in. Using tracking software, the victim was able to locate the phone to a narrow stretch of Loantaka Way in Madison. With the assistance of officers from Madison, the phone was located at a private residence. The suspect, Mary A Harris age 54 of Maplewood, was at that particular location as she is a home health care aide. She admitted taking the phone off the counter but intended to return it. She was arrested and charged with theft, and released pending further court action.

On February 15 at 1:13 PM, Patrolman Battiloro investigated a 2-car crash on Coleman Avenue. A 2004 Toyota driven by Jane Merahn age 67 of Chatham, was entering Coleman Avenue from Clark Street when she struck a car traveling south on Coleman Avenue. The other car was a 1998 VW driven by John Hug age 37 of Chatham. There were no injuries and Merahn was issued a summons for Careless Driving.
