On August 7 at 7:33 PM, Patrols responded to a report of a car into a tree and on fire on Lafayette Avenue in the area of Essex Road. When patrols arrived the driver was out of the car. The Chatham Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Patrolman Roy George investigated the crash and found that a 1999 Honda CRV driven by Ryan Cardoza age 18 of Chatham, was traveling south on Lafayette when he ran off the road and struck a tree. Cardoza stated there was a problem with the steering wheel which caused him to veer off the road and strike the tree. The Chatham Emergency Squad responded to the scene to evaluate the driver but he refused medical attention. No summonses were issued to the driver.
On August 7 at 4:31 PM Patrolman Michael Permison investigated a 3 car accident on Main Street near Hedges Avenue. A 2009 Volvo driven by David Lane age 48 of Short Hills was traveling east on Main Street when he struck a vehicle that was stopped in traffic. That vehicle in turn was pushed into the vehicle in front of it. The first car was driven by Marguerite O’Neill age 69 of Sunset Beach NC and the second car was driven by Ronald Oppenheimer age 61 of New York. All of the cars were driven from the scene and Lane was issued a summons for Careless Driving.
On August 7 at 8:47 AM Sergeant Michael Mahoney investigated an accident involving a truck that struck the bridge on Watchung Avenue. A box truck driven by Cedric Davis age 41 of North Bergen, was traveling west on Watchung when he struck the railroad overpass. Davis was not injured and he was issued a summons for Careless Driving.
On August 6 at 2:14 PM Sergeant Mahoney stopped a 2000 Honda on Main Street after a computer check revealed that the driver was revoked. The driver was identified as Stephanie Egger age 31 of Denville. Further checks showed that Egger had 2 outstanding warrants from Hillside totaling $1,000. Egger was arrested and brought to headquarters where a family member posted the $1,000 bail. She was also issued a summons for Driving While Revoked and released.
All persons charged with an offense are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
