Chatham 7th-Grade Youth Football Wins Home Opener Over Bloomfield

Monday, September 23, 2013 • 11:55pm

CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham's 7th grade youth football won its home opener Sunday over a strong Bloomfield Bengals squad.

Bloomfield, coming off of a big win vs. Berkeley Heights last week looked to go 2-0 at Cougar Stadium.  The 7th grade team struck early when quarterback Ryan Lonergan connected with wide receiver Colin Schroeder for a 60-yard touchdown on the second play of the game.

Bloomfield bounced back with 14-yard touchdown pass of their own, resulting in a 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter.  The Cougars once again struck early in the second quarter with another Lonergan to Schroeder TD pass, this one good for 50 yards. Zach Hoban converted the extra point. In the 7th-grade league, a kick conversion results in 2 points due to it's difficulty.  Chatham led 14-6 at halftime.

Bloomfield scored again in the fourth quarter and tried to kick an extra point to even the score.  Defensive lineman Nick Vivona disrupted the attempt for Chatham.  Chatham led 14-12 with four minutes left.  A crucial 9-yard run by fullback Josh Smith for a key Cougar first down with two minutes left sealed the victory as Chatham was able to run out the clock.  Stellar defensive play from Pietro Marino should be recognized as he paced all players in the tackle column.
