CBS' Dan Raviv to Speak at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel on Friday, Oct. 26

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel kicks off its 2012-2013 Adult Education program with Shabbat Scholar Dan Raviv.
Raviv will speak about “The U.S. Elections and Their Impact on the Middle East” on Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. during the worship service at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, 432 Scotland Road in South Orange. A festive Shabbat dinner will follow the service.
All are welcome to attend the service. Advance registration is required for the dinner. The cost of the dinner is $36 for nontemple members.
A foreign correspondent for CBS News on radio and television for more than 30 years, Raviv is now the Washington-based national correspondent for the radio network as well as the co-author of a new book about Israeli covert operations, “Spies Against Armageddon.”
This expert on worldwide espionage and foreign affairs has interviewed Olmert, Peres, Sharon, Barak, Netanyahu, Arafat, Mubarak and all the major Middle East players. His articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Times of London and other major newspapers.
He is an honors graduate of Harvard University and a winner of two Overseas Press Club of America awards for his coverage of the Persian Gulf. His coverage of the Bush-Gore election won a Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel will feature the following additional Shabbat Scholars in the series: Rabbi Stephen Lewis Fuchs, president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, “Reform Judaism: A Worldwide Movement” on March 1; Rabbi Jeff Salkin, director of the New Jersey Region of the Anti-Defamation League, “The Oldest Ism: Anti-Semitism” on April 5; and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, “Sex in the Jewish Tradition” on April 26.
The Adult Education program also will feature a film series. The community is invited to enjoy snacks and a movie followed by an interactive discussion moderated by Dr. Eric Goldman, founder and president of Ergo Media and a film reviewer for New Jersey’s The Jewish Standard. The film series is free for temple members and $5 per film for nonmembers.
Films include “Train De Vie/Train of Life” on Nov. 18; “Ahead of Time” on March 9 with special guests documentary producers and Ruth Gruber, an international foreign correspondent, humanitarian and photo journalist; and “Waltz with Bashir” on May 5.
Rabbi Daniel Cohen will be teaching a new offsite class, “Tequila and Text” on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at Suzy Q’s BBQ in West Orange. Participants will taste five varieties of tequilas exploring a new text with each taste. Rabbi Cohen will also teach an “e-Judaism Webinar” on March 18 and “Biblical Food – Teaching and Tasting” on April 15.
