PATERSON, NJ - A 20-year-old woman from Long Island is in critical condition after she was shot in the back while riding in a vehicle in the 1st Ward early Sunday morning, police said.
The victim and other people were driving in the Northside looking for the location of a party when they passed through the area of N. 6th and Clinton streets, police said. "Gunshots were heard, and the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the area,'' said Sgt. Patrick Murray, head of the Cease-Fire unit.
As they left the scene, the woman told the driver she had been wounded, police said. She then told the driver to take her to Broiadway, thinking that the Barnert medical office complex was still a hospital. When they found that facility closed, they called police at about 3:10 am and the woman was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
The other occupants of the vehicle were from Kearny, North Arlington and Newark, police said.
Murray said detectives are still conducting their investigation and he is asking that anyone with information contact the Paterson Police Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
