Candy, Gift and Gourmet Show Hits the Boards; it’s 76ers vs Nets at Boardwalk Hall; Prints from the Brandywine Workshop on Exhibit

The Philadelphia National Candy Gift and Gourmet Show, the country’s largest trade show dedicated to the retail confectionery business, will feature a contest open to anyone in the candy trade during its annual fall show at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The show, sponsored by the Retail Confectioners Association of Philadelphia, runs from Sunday, September 9 through Tuesday, September 11.
Show producers will judge entries in three categories: Best New Product, Best New Media or Advertising Idea and Best New Packaging. The first prize in each category is a dinner for two in a well-known area restaurant, along with bragging rights. The competition – as well as the tradeshow – is open to all in the trade. The show, founded in 1949, provides candy makers and suppliers an opportunity to share information, increase business and candy-making skills during seminars, and speak directly with suppliers, equipment manufacturers, distributors and other candy companies.
According to show chairman Frances Cox Jr. of Dorothy Cox Candies, Inc. in Fairhaven, MA, “The competition is a fun way to generate excitement and interest in the show and refresh the way we think about our business.” Previous shows have featured chef competitions in which chocolate had to be an ingredient of each course.

The Philadelphia 76ers will take their game from the city to the seaside in an historic “Boardwalk Classic” match against the Brooklyn Nets at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall (2301 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, N.J. 08401) on Saturday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. The game is sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City, Global Spectrum with Longport Media serving as a promotional partner.

The Boardwalk Classic will mark the third meeting of the Sixers and Nets at Boardwalk Hall, the first two being wins for Philadelphia. On October 9, 1982, a Sixers team led by Head Coach Billy Cunningham and game-high scorer Darryl Dawkins beat the Nets in a 93-91 victory. The following year, on October 8, 1983, Moses Malone’s 19 points and 18 points from Julius “Dr. J” Erving spurred the Sixers to their 117-113 overtime win.

Originally built in 1929, Boardwalk Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. It underwent a three-year, $90 million renovation to improve the building’s original Roman Renaissance style with 21st century comfort and amenities. Since reopening in 2001, Boardwalk Hall has been recognized as Atlantic City’s premier entertainment venue, known for high profile concerts, family shows and sporting events.

In 2009, Philadelphia’s renowned Brandywine Workshop donated 100 prints by 89 artists to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in memory of the Museum’s late director, Anne d’Harnoncourt. This year, the Workshop celebrates its 40th anniversary as a center dedicated to the creation of prints and to broadening their appreciation. To honor the Workshop’s generous gift, the Museum is presenting the exhibition Full Spectrum: Prints from the Brandywine Workshop. It presents 54 prints by 53 artists including John Biggers, Edgar Heap of Birds, Mei-ling Hom, Ibrahim Miranda, and Howardena Pindell.
Reflecting the broad range of the artists who have produced work at the Brandywine Workshop, Full Spectrum will feature works reflecting a wide range of traditions and cultures: African and African American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, Latino, Caribbean, and Native American. Cultural identity, political and social issues, portraiture, and landscape, as well as patterning and pure abstraction, are just some of the many concerns explored in their prints, underscoring the breadth of the workshop’s stylistic and conceptual reach.

Fashion's Night Out is a one-night-only fashion extravaganza celebrated in stores in more than 500 cities nationwide and 19countries worldwide. The event features exciting presentations such as designer appearances, celebrity guests, fashion shows and musical performances.
Since its 2009 introduction in New York City, Fashion’s Night Out has expanded, and has grown to include many cities across the nation and around the globe. Nationally, Fashion’s Night Out is celebrated from coast to coast – from Boston to Washington, D.C., and from Chicago to Los Angeles. And now, for the first time, the Philadelphia fashion and retail communities will participate in all of the fashion fanfare.
Fashion’s Night Out opens up the fashion window to the world and, locally, represents the official “preview” event of The Philadelphia Collection, the third annual weeklong series of independently-produced fashion and style events which will take over the city -- from Thursday, September 13 to Thursday, September 20. The collaboration will continue to put Philadelphia on the map as a stellar “fashion force” and burgeoning fashion and design community. Nearly 75 events, spanning from large-scale “featured” runway shows and fashion presentations to smaller events – including trunk shows and expert panel discussions – entice consumers to shop and indulge in fall fashion.
The Stockton College Office of Service Learning will host a series of topical “Headliners” discussions at the College on Friday afternoons.
The series will feature weekly topics plucked straight from the news media every Monday morning. A question board will then be placed outside the Office of Service-Learning on Mondays and in various food courts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Finally, the topic will be discussed at length every Friday afternoon.
The discussions, open to all, will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on Fridays in the Campus Center “overlook lounge” on the building’s top floor.
Fall dates for the series are September 14, 21, and 28; October 5, 12, and 19; November 2, 9, 16, and 30; and December 7.
