Candidate for Hire Causes Concerns About Nepotism in District

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The district’s nepotism policy reared its head at the July 22 board of education meeting when board member Patrick Breslin announced that there is a candidate for a job at one of the schools with a relative working as an administrator in the same building.

That, he said, may be in violation of the nepotism policy.

The current policy states that one family member cannot report to another relative as part of the job, but, since this possible employee would not be reporting directly to the relative, the board found it did not violate the policy.

Board member Jackie Barlow had some concerns, however, as the two employees would be working in the same building.

“We need to be careful as a district if they are in the same building and ensure that it is not perceived that the candidate was hired by a relative in administration,” she said.

Breslin said the board needs to act on whatever the policy states and discuss any changes if the policy appears to be too vague.

“We need to act only on the policy and not on perceptions,” he said.

The board opted to have the concerns about the nepotism policy discussed at their next policy committee meeting and make changes to it if members find the policy to be too vague.
