CALDWELL/WESTCALDWELL, NJ – The Caldwell town council meeting on August 5 was an emotional one as the mayor and town council paid tribute to Capt. Gerard Paris, Cpl . Lenny Santiago, Ptl. Greg Ruesch, Det. Paul Mazzeo,  Lt. Demetrious Andrinopoulos, Officer Matthew DeAngelo and WEFAS Capt. David Black for their hand in saving the life of Sgt. Fred Arnold, and to Officer Candice Marinaro and Officer Robert Adams for their involvement in saving the life of a resident.

Mayor Ann Dassing grew emotional as she opened the ceremony, recounting the event that, “took place two months ago to the day,” when Sgt. Fred Arnold suffered a heart attack from behind the wheel. Dassing expressed her gratitude for those involved and presented the responding officers with the Mayor’s Awards.

Chief James Bongiorno of Caldwell also credited resident Mark Sauer who was the first to notice Arnold veering off the road, followed him, and when it was apparent he needed help, called it in.

“This was a classic example of how seconds save lives,” said Bongiorno.

Bongiorno credited Arnold’s "miracle" recovery to a combination of  “the team effort of first responders and Sgt. Arnold’s will to live”.  Bongiorno also thanked Chief Michael Bramhall of West Caldwell for his leadership and support during the occurance.

Sgt. Fred Arnold was visably moved by the outpouring during the ceremony and as he addressed those in attendance to conclude.

“These guys are awesome,” said Arnold. “The reality is, I was laying dead on the side of the street and they didn’t let me go.  As police officers, we are supposed to serve the people in our community.  I’m so thankful for their professionalism and their courage.  We look out for each other.  I love them like brothers.  I am truly blessed.”
